Romania holds military parade to celebrate National Day

BUCHAREST, Dec. 1 -- More than 1,300 troops and military hardware paraded here to mark Romania's National Day on Tuesday.
The Ministry of Administration and Interior, the Romanian Intelligence Service, and the Protection and Guard Service took part in the parade, with Major General Ion Palsoiu, the Land Forces deputy chief of staff, as the parade commander.
The parade was closed by the Romanian Army's flagship unit, the30th Mihai Viteazul Guard Regiment, which has an impressive history.
The 30th Regiment, set up in 1860 by Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza,is the first guard unit in the modern Romanian Army. It was conceived as a combat unit first and foremost, and also as a representative unit.
Attending the festivities alongside President Traian Basescu were Defence Minister Mihai Stanisoara, Army chief of staff Admiral Gheorghe Marin, chairman of the Senate's Commission on defence, public order and national security Teodor Melescanu, Prime Minister designate Liviu Negoita, and former presidents Emil Constantinescu and Ion Iliescu.
This year was 91st anniversary of the Great Unification of December 1, 1918, which Romanians chose as their National Day in 1989. On that day, citizens of Transylvania, Banat, Crisana and Maramures met in the city of Alba-lulia and voted to join Romania.
